Italian Direct Object Pronouns: lo, la, li, le
In Italian, direct object pronouns (lo, la, li, le) replace people, animals, or things that directly receive the action of the verb. They make your sentences smoother and more natural — just like “it,” “him,” “her,” or “them” in English.
The pronoun must agree in gender and number with the noun it replaces.
| Gender | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | lo | li |
| Feminine | la | le |
lo = it / him
la = it / her
li = them (masculine)
le = them (feminine)
How They Work
They replace the direct object and answer the question who? or what? They usually come before the conjugated verb:
Do you want the apple? → Sì, la voglio. (Yes, I want it.)
Do you eat spaghetti? → Sì, li mangio. (Yes, I eat them.)
Do you know the girls? → Sì, le conosco. (Yes, I know them.)
With Modal Verbs
With potere, dovere, volere (can, must, want), the pronoun can go before the modal verb or attach to the infinitive:
Lo voglio vedere. = Voglio vederlo.
Before Vowels
When lo or la comes before a verb starting with a vowel, it becomes l’:
La invito → L’invito (I invite her).
This contraction doesn’t happen with li or le.
In Compound Tenses
In compound tenses like the passato prossimo, the pronoun goes before the auxiliary verb and the past participle agrees in gender and number with the pronoun.
Hai visto la ragazza → L’hai vista.
Hai comprato le mele → Le hai comprate.
Hai preso gli occhiali → Li hai presi.
With People
Direct object pronouns also replace people:
Vedi Maria? → La vedo ogni giorno. (I see her every day.)
Conosci Marco e Giovanni? → Li conosco bene. (I know them well.)
Don’t Confuse with Indirect Pronouns
Gli / le = indirect → replace “to him / to her.”
Examples:
Vedo Maria → La vedo (I see her).
Parlo a Maria → Le parlo (I talk to her).
Common Mistakes
❌ Mangi gli spaghetti? Sì, le mangio. → ✅ Mangi gli spaghetti? Sì, li mangio.
❌ Leggo il libro lo. → ✅ Lo leggo.
