When you start learning Italian, one rule that makes reading much easier is how the letters C and G change sound. Sometimes they are hard, sometimes they are soft. Once you know the pattern, you can guess the pronunciation of many new words.
Hard C and Soft C
The letter C has two main sounds in Italian.
Hard C = /k/
Similar to K in “car”. You get this sound when C is followed by A, O, or U:
- ca → casa
- co → cosa
- cu → cucina
All of these start with a strong K sound.
Soft C = /tʃ/
Similar to CH in “chair”. You get this sound when C is followed by E or I:
- ce → cena
- ci → cinema, cibo
CHE and CHI
Sometimes you want a hard C sound before E or I. In Italian you add the letter H:
- che → /ke/
- chi → /ki/ as in chiave
The letter H is silent. It does not have its own sound; it only keeps C “hard”.
Hard G and Soft G
The letter G follows the same pattern.
Hard G = /g/
Like G in “go”. You get this sound when G is followed by A, O, or U:
- ga → gatto
- go → gomma
- gu → gusto
Soft G = /dʒ/
Similar to the J sound in “jeans”. You get this sound when G is followed by E or I:
- ge → gelato
- gi → giraffa, pagina
GHE and GHI
To keep a hard G sound before E or I, Italian uses GH:
- ghe → as in spaghetti
- ghi → as in ghiro
Again, the letter H is silent and only keeps the G “hard”.
Why this rule is so useful
Recognising these patterns helps you read Italian correctly without guessing. It also helps you avoid mixing up similar-looking words:
- cena (dinner) → soft C
- cane (dog) → hard C
- giro (tour/ride) → soft G
- gatto (cat) → hard G
With a bit of listening practice, your ear gets used to the difference and you start recognising hard and soft sounds automatically.

Keep this small map in mind when you read Italian:

- Soft C: ce, ci
