The exam you need
for Italian citizenship.

If you are applying for Italian citizenship — through marriage, descent, or long-term residency — you are required to pass the CILS B1 exam (or an equivalent recognised qualification). It proves that you can function in Italian in everyday situations.

The exam is run by the Università per Stranieri di Siena and is held at official centres worldwide. It is one of the most widely recognised Italian language certifications.

Four parts. I prepare you for all of them.

📖

Reading

Understanding written Italian — notices, articles, everyday texts. You need to follow meaning accurately and answer comprehension questions.

We practise: text types, vocabulary in context, reading strategies
✍️

Writing

Producing written Italian — messages, short letters, simple descriptions. Accuracy and clarity matter more than complexity.

We practise: written tasks, grammar accuracy, typical formats
🎧

Listening

Understanding spoken Italian — announcements, conversations, short recordings. Speed and accent variation can catch people out.

We practise: authentic recordings, note-taking, key word recognition
🗣️

Speaking

Holding a conversation in Italian — describing, explaining, discussing. The examiner needs to understand you and follow what you say.

We practise: fluency, pronunciation, typical speaking tasks

  • You have a basic level of Italian but need to consolidate and reach B1 confidently

  • You have tried studying alone but feel unsure about what the exam actually requires
  • You want honest feedback on where you are and what you need to work on

Tailored to your level and your exam date.

1

We assess where you are

In the first session we identify your current level, your strengths and weaknesses, and how much time you have before the exam.

2

We build a plan

I put together a preparation plan focused on the parts that need the most work. No time wasted on things you already know.

3

We work through all four parts

Reading, writing, listening and speaking — each covered systematically. After each lesson I send notes and materials to review.

4

We do mock exam practice

Before your exam date, we run through real past-paper style tasks under exam conditions so you know exactly what to expect.

Questions

How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your starting level and how much time you have before the exam. Some students need 10 sessions, others need 25. I’ll give you an honest assessment after the first lesson.
What level of Italian do I need to start?
You should have at least a basic foundation — A2 level or close to it. If you are a complete beginner, you will need more time and we would start with general Italian lessons before moving to exam preparation.
Can I prepare for the CILS B1 online?
Yes. All lessons take place on Google Meet. You just need a stable internet connection and a device with a microphone. No software to install.
How long are the lessons?
Standard lessons are 60 minutes. We can discuss frequency and session length based on your schedule and how close your exam date is.
Is the CILS B1 the only exam accepted for citizenship?
No — several certifications are accepted, including CELI B1, PLIDA B1, and others. However the CILS is one of the most widely available and well-recognised. If you are unsure which exam to take, get in touch and I’ll help you decide.
How much does it cost?
Get in touch and I’ll send you current pricing. Lessons are charged per session or in packs. Payment is handled securely via Stripe.
